Thibodaux native honored by League

Charley Richard President's Award 2016Charley Richard, a prominent Louisiana sugarcane researcher and crop consultant, was recognized with the 2016 American Sugar Cane League President’s Award at the group’s annual meeting February 2 in Lafayette, Louisiana.

It is the highest honor the League recognizes, League President Michael Melancon said.
"Dr. Richard has been a valuable asset to the Louisiana sugarcane industry for many years,” Melancon said. "We are very grateful for the service he has provided.”

Richard, a Thibodaux native, received his Bachelor of Science from Nicholls State University in plant science and earned a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 1975.

He worked in the LSU sugarcane breeding program before taking a position with the League as a field agronomist in 1977. In 1985, he was named the League’s research director and his duties expanded to include sugarcane agronomy, planting and harvesting practices, mechanization, cane delivery, factory sampling, and grower payments, raw sugar factory processing, energy, and environmental and sustainability issues.

Richard is currently executive vice president and managing director for Sugar Processing Research Institute, an international organization conducting research on sugar quality issues for its beet and cane sponsors along with sugar users and suppliers to the industry.
He is the owner of C. Richard and Associates, a research organization which works in agronomy, processing and energy production in numerous areas of the United States, Puerto Rico, Guyana, and Belize.

He and his wife, Romney, own and publish the Sugar Journal, an international publication covering sugarcane and sugarbeet production, processing and refining for food and energy sources. He serves as executive editor of Sugar Journal, is the author of over 460 publications, and a member of numerous business and civic organizations. He and Romney have 3 sons and 2 daughters along with 7 grandchildren.
