Sugarcane Field Day, USDA Sugarcane Research Farm

The USDA Sugarcane Research Unit in Houma, Louisiana supports the Louisiana sugarcane industry and other sugarcane growers in the U.S. by conducting field research on new plant varieties, farming techniques and other projects. Grower Pete Dufresne farms sugarcane on the east bank of the Mississippi River near Donaldsonville. Late summer rain and Hurricane Isaac delayed planting and many Louisiana sugarcane farmers had to juggle planting next year's crop while harvesting the 2012 growth. Louisiana's sugarcane harvest season will be completed by New Year's Day.

When ancient farmers planted their crops, they paid homage to God, and they have been doing so ever since. Catholicism and sugarcane have been linked ever since the Jesuits prayed for sugarcane success when they first planted the crop in the Bayou State in 1751.
