There are currently 11 raw sugar factories operating in Louisiana. Commonly known as “sugar mills,” these facilities are primarily located in south Louisiana. While the number of sugar mills in the state has decreased over the past four decades, this is due to the increased efficiency of our factories, rather than a drop in sugar production. Today’s Louisiana sugar mills have become so efficient that it takes fewer mills to process the cane – even though sugarcane production remains at or near all-time highs.
